Pennyfield Lock House

Posted by Bud (North Bethesda, United States) on 23 February 2012 in Architecture.

This is Lock House 22 also know as the Pennyfield Lock House. It is so named for the last two lock keepers - father and then son named Pennyfield. It has been renovated and furnished as it might have been in the mid 1800's when the C&O Canal was in operation. It is now available for overnight stay by visitors to the C&O Canal National Historical Park as part of the Canal Quarters program. It is located near historic Tobytown, MD at about mile 19.6 on the towpath of the Canal.
It is situated right next to the towpath that the mules walked to pull the cargo barges. The Canal can be seen in the background to the left of the towpath. The swing beam of one of the lock gates is in the left foreground.
My wife and I are the volunteers who look after this wonderfully preserved historic structure.
